Something Will Outlive You Whether You Aim It or Not

People hear the word legacy and think about the end, and about money, and about people who had enough of it to put a name on a building. So they file the whole subject under later, and later does the filing for them.

Here is what is actually happening. Right now, today, you are transmitting. To children if you have them and to other people’s children if you do not. To whoever watches how you handle being disrespected. To the people who will remember one sentence you said in passing for thirty years while you forget you said it.

Transmission is not optional. Aim is optional. That is the whole distinction and it is the difference between a legacy and a residue.

And I need to say the harder half, because I do not do comfortable half-truths. Some of what you are transmitting is not what you intend. Some of it is what was transmitted to you, still running, unexamined, going out the other side of you into people who did not consent to receive it. That is how a pattern reaches a fourth generation, not by anybody choosing it, but by nobody stopping to look at it.

A chain does not break because someone tolerated it quietly. It breaks because one person in the line turns around, looks at what came through, and decides on purpose what continues.

That person is not usually the most gifted one in the family. It is the one who looked.
