The Hardest Move Is the One Where You Wait
Anybody can swing. The hard part is standing there holding something powerful and choosing not to use it yet.
I fix things that other people broke, and I will tell you what I almost never find at the bottom of a mess. A villain.
What I usually find is somebody who was completely right, and said so, immediately, at the worst possible moment.
Being right is an ingredient. It is not a plan. What you do with it, and when, is the plan.
Waiting is not losing. Waiting is a move.
There is a particular kind of person who has never lost an argument and has also never changed anybody minds. They win every exchange and lose every person, and they usually decide the problem is everybody else.
The strongest people I know can stand there fully able to win and choose not to, because they can see that winning now would close a door that is going to be open next month.
That is not weakness and it is not being scared. It takes more to hold than it does to swing, which is exactly why almost nobody practises it.
You will get a chance this week to be right at the wrong moment. What you do in that second is a real skill, and it can be trained.
