The Thing You Make When Nobody Is Paying You Is the Real One

Everybody has an output they cannot stop producing. It usually earns nothing and it is usually the tell.

Notebooks. Voice memos at one in the morning. A folder of things nobody has seen. Bread. Furniture. Playlists made for one specific person who never found out. Long messages you write and do not send.

You have one. You might be a little embarrassed about it, which is normally a good sign.

I wrote for eleven years before anybody paid me a cent, and I would have kept going if nobody ever had, and that fact is more informative about me than anything on my resume. What you do without a market is what you were built to do. A market can make you do almost anything. Only design makes you do a thing at one in the morning for free.

And I want to say something to the people whose thing is not artistic, because this gets framed as a creativity conversation and that is too narrow. Some of you build systems for the joy of it. Some of you organise. Some of you cannot walk past a broken thing. Some of you make people laugh compulsively in situations where it is arguably inappropriate. That is output too. It comes from the same place.

The reason this matters is that assignments are matched to how you actually make, not to how you would like to be seen making. Someone deployed against their native output will be competent and hollow, and will not understand why, because on paper it was the right job.

You have been producing evidence your whole life, for free, in your own time. Nobody ever told you it was evidence.
