You Are Carrying Beliefs You Have Never Once Examined

Most of what a person believes was installed, not chosen. That is not a criticism. It is simply how belief gets into a person.

You absorbed a great deal before you were old enough to evaluate any of it. A household has a theology whether or not it ever says one out loud, and the unspoken parts are the ones that install deepest, because nothing that is never stated can ever be argued with.

So people arrive in adulthood carrying a mixture. Some of it is genuinely theirs, examined and kept on purpose. Some of it is a parent’s. Some of it is a teacher they had at fourteen. And some of it is not from any tradition at all; it came in through the culture and put on religious clothing on the way.

My work is dividing things rightly, so let me be plain about what I am not saying. I am not saying inherited belief is false. Some of what you were handed is the truest thing you own. I am saying you cannot tell which parts those are until you have looked, and most people have never looked.

The examination is not dangerous. This is the fear that stops people, and I want to address it directly. Holding a belief up to the light does not destroy a true one. It only ever destroys a false one, and you were carrying that weight for nothing.

I sit with people who discover, at fifty, that a thing they had feared their whole life was never in the Scriptures at all. It came from a person, once, in a sentence, and it lived in them for four decades under a false name.

That discovery is not a loss of faith. It is a return of about four decades.

Some of what you carry is yours and some of it was handed to you in the dark. Sorting the two is not a threat to your faith. It is the most respectful thing you can do to it.
