Every Squad Has Someone Who Counts Everyone Back In

No poster has ever been made of the person who notices the empty chair. I would like to make one.

You know the moment. Everyone comes back from the thing, loud, telling it wrong and telling it better than it happened, and one person is standing slightly apart doing a headcount. Not because they were asked. Because they cannot help it.

That is a Guardian, and I have spent a long time listening to Guardians tell me they are not really gifted. They say it in almost identical words. I just care about people. As though caring were the consolation prize handed out to whoever did not get a real power.

Let me tell you what I have watched happen to squads without one. They win the first thing. They win it big. And then somebody quietly stops showing up, and nobody notices for five weeks, and by the time anyone does the person is not reachable any more. The squad does not fail on the mission. It fails on the walk home.

The Guardian is not the support class. The Guardian is the reason the others get a second mission at all. Green is not the colour of the reserve bench. It is the colour of the one who makes sure there is still a formation on Tuesday.

If you are the one who counts, you have been undervaluing yourself by about a decade. And if you are not, look around, because someone near you is doing it right now and has never once been thanked for it.

The thing you do without being asked is the thing you were built to do. That is not a personality trait. That is an assignment showing through.
