It Will Use Your Own History as Ammunition
The most effective thing ever used against you was not a lie about you. It was a true thing about you, quoted at the worst possible moment.
I sit with people in the aftermath of things, so I have heard a great many accusations repeated back to me, and I have noticed something about the ones that land hardest.
They are usually accurate.
Not the wild ones. Those bounce. The ones that stay are specific, dated, and unfortunately true. A thing you actually did. A season you were genuinely not yourself. A person you actually failed. And it is produced at exactly the moment you were about to move, never before and never after.
That timing is not coincidence. It is the tell. An accusation that only ever arrives when you are about to step forward is not conscience. Conscience is not strategic. Conscience wants you repaired and does not care about your calendar.
I want to be careful, because there is real repentance in the world and I am not going to talk anyone out of it. But repentance has a direction. It moves you toward repair and then it lets you go. The other thing has no direction. It circles. It brings the same file to the same person for eleven years and never once proposes a remedy.
If the same three memories arrive every time you are about to do something, you are not being convicted. You are being managed.
Something has been reading your file back to you and calling it honesty. You are allowed to ask why it only ever opens that file when you are about to move.
