The Counterfeit Does Not Arrive Ugly

I work in beauty, so I know exactly how it is made, and I know what it can be used for. A true thing and a counterfeit of that thing are built from identical materials. That is what makes a counterfeit worth making.

Nothing that intends to take you will approach you as something you find repulsive. It has no reason to. It will arrive as something lovely, and it will be genuinely lovely, and the loveliness will be the mechanism rather than the disguise.

A messenger is a form. Fill it with truth and you get one thing. Fill the same form with something false and it still looks like a messenger, still sounds like one, still moves like one. Same shape. Opposite content. In a world where anyone can build a voice, that is not a metaphor any more. It is a description of Tuesday.

So the old test does not work. You cannot sort by whether a thing feels good, because the good feeling is precisely what is being manufactured. Beauty is not evidence. It never was; we only got away with treating it as evidence when counterfeits were expensive to make.

I would not tell you to become suspicious of beauty. That is a smaller life and I refuse it. I would tell you that beauty needs a second question after it, and most people have never been taught the second question.

What breaks a person is rarely something they saw coming and admitted. It is something they let in because it was beautiful and they were tired.

The thing hunting you has better taste than you were warned about. It knows what you find beautiful, and it has been practising.
