The Ones Who Left Are Still on the List
You walked. At some point you decided the whole thing was not for you, and you left. And you have quietly assumed ever since that leaving cancelled it.
I write for prodigals because I was one and because the road back is the road I know best. So let me tell you the thing nobody told me for years.
Leaving does not remove your name.
You can be angry at it, you can be finished with it, you can go build a whole life somewhere the subject never comes up. None of that edits the record. The record was written before you had a vote and your walking out was not a strong enough act to reach back and change it.
I know how that sounds. When you have spent years constructing a case for why you are out, somebody telling you the case does not hold is not comforting. It is annoying. It means the argument you settled is open again.
But an unopened door does not stop being your door because you stopped standing in front of it.
I have watched men my age walk back into a room they left at nineteen, braced for the whole place to turn and look. And nothing happened. Nobody had removed anything. The chair was where they left it, which was worse in a way, because it meant the years of staying away had been their own idea the entire time.
You are allowed to check. That is all I am saying. You are allowed to look at the file and see whether your name is on it, without committing to anything, without a speech, without explaining where you have been.
You did not forfeit it. You left, and it stayed. Whatever is written into you has been running quietly the whole time you were gone.
Take the Born Again DNA Core Profile to find out what is still there. Nobody is watching you take it and nothing on it asks where you have been.
