There Are Five Kinds of Hero and This Is Very Old

Not five ranks. Five kinds. That distinction is the whole thing and people have argued about it for centuries anyway.

I am a teacher, so let me be careful here. This is not a modern idea with an old quote stuck on the front to make it sound important. It is the other way round. The five were written down first, on purpose, and everything since has been people rediscovering them.

That should change how it feels to find out which one you are.

If it were a personality quiz, your result would be a description. Something to read once and forget. But if the five were given, then finding yours is not a description at all. It is more like being told your position on a team you were already playing for.

And you are not the first person to hold your position. There is a long line of people behind you who had the same one, most of them ordinary, most of them never famous, all of them needed.

You inherited a spot. Somebody stood in it before you.

You did not pick your kind and you cannot swap it. You can only find out which one you were given.
