You Were Picked First

Everybody knows that feeling. Grown-ups still know it. They just have quieter lines now.

Here is something nobody tells you when you are standing there. There was another list, made a long time ago, and on that one you went first.

Not first because you were fastest. Not first because you were the tallest or the loudest or the best at anything. First because whoever made the list already knew exactly what you would be good at, and wanted you on the team for it.

You have not seen that list yet. That is the strange part. You have been living your whole life with your name near the top of something you have never read.

And I think you already suspect it a little. There are days when you feel like there is more in you than what you got to use that day. That feeling is not you being greedy. That is equipment you have not been handed the manual for.

You are not here by accident. Somebody picked you on purpose, and they picked you early.
